Unbound: Nathan Smith ʼ10M (MS), ʼ13M (PhD)
In the first edition of a new Better Things series, Nathan defines boundlessness through the lens of equity and inclusion.
“To be ‘boundless’ is to embrace a mindset of limitless potential and unrestrained ambition. It means to be bold and to think outside of the box. It also means to be fearless in making decisions that ensure the University lives up to the meaning of Meliora.”
Nathan Smith
Associate professor of neuroscience | School of Medicine and Dentistry
Associate dean for equity and inclusion | Research and Research Education
Nathan’s work is directly connected to the Boundless Possibility goals for Exceptional undergraduate and graduate education and Faculty and staff success. “These goals will be achieved through our dedicated efforts in recruitment and transforming the culture on the ground, by building a sense of belonging and community,” he says. “By fostering a more equitable, inclusive, and diverse environment, we are better positioned to achieve these critical objectives.”
For Nathan, “boundless” means cultivating an environment where people can thrive. In collaboration with Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs, Nathan is working to bring more individuals who are underrepresented in the biomedical sciences to the University of Rochester. And by sponsoring events—such as the Multicultural Celebration and the Distinguished Alumni Speaking Series—he’s ensuring the University is an environment where all researchers not only thrive, but also feel a sense of community and belonging. Nathan says, “It is crucial that our learners, faculty, and staff feel welcome, seen, and heard.”
